Airplane Ferry Pilot
If you are an experienced pilot, a newbie looking to build some flight hours or hold a commercial pilot's license and want to see some more of the world for free then becoming an airplane ferry pilot is something you should look further into.
So what is a ferry pilot? Well, when an airplane is bought or sold, or just moving to a new operating location it has to be flown there. Very often the person buying or selling the airplane doesn't have time to move the airplane him/herself so they hire a ferry pilot. These are often retired pilots still enjoying to fly without having to pay an arm and a leg to get in the air, recreational pilots (with a CPL) looking for some free flight hours or pilots looking to build the time needed for a more steady flying job.
Ferrying airplanes is by no means a solid income. Most ferry pilots get from $100-150 per day (plus expenses), but you only fly when there is an airplane to be moved. And since there may be several days between every time you fly - building flight hours is something that takes time. In the positive end you have a unique opportunity to gain broad experience on lighter airplanes and even build some multi hours quicker then you would with a conventional flight school.
There are also a lot of aircrafts produced and/or sold in the US to markets in Europe and Asia. Depending on size and distance to new location many of these are moved around by a ferry pilot. Though it sounds preposterous to fly across the Atlantic in a small single engine airplane it is something that happens very often (via Canada, Greenland, Iceland….etc…to Europe). Pilots conducting these flights are usually highly specialized and the aircrafts are temporarily modified for long range cross country flights.
