Job Description:

The Safety Manager is responsible for providing guidance and direction for the planning, implementation and operation of the organization's Safety Management System (SMS). The Safety Manager, as delegated by the DFO and DOM, shall reports direct to the Accountable Executive.


  • Demonstrate a successful completion of approved SMS Training;
  • Administer, coordinate and manage the operation of the SMS;
  • Assure safety authorities, responsibilities, and accountably are transmitted to all personnel;
  • Establishing and maintaining an identification and reporting system for hazards, near misses and incidents;
  • Investigate, analyse and identify the root cause(s) of all hazards, near misses and incidents identified under the company SMS as part of a team or individually;
  • Establish and maintain a safety data system to monitor and analyse trends;
  • Monitor and evaluate the results of corrective actions for reported hazards, incidents and accidents;
  • Monitor the aviation industry to identify safety concerns that will affect the company;
  • Monitor the effectiveness of the SMS training;
  • Prepare the agenda for the Management System Review of the SMS;
  • Maintain the SMS Manual to ensure it complies with current applicable legislation and safety policy; and
  • Develop and maintain the Company‚Äôs Emergency Response Plan.



  • Bachelor's degree, plus 5 to 8 years of safety and/or quality assurance experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience;
  • Must have thorough knowledge of Transport Canada regulations and OSHA standards including: compliance, laws, regulations, record keeping, loss control techniques, training, and establishing policies;
  • Experience developing, coordinating, and conducting training, safety inspections and investigations;
  • Ability to prepare clear and concise written procedures, reports, and documentation;
  • Root Cause and Corrective Action experience;
  • Strong Computer Literacy and Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, Power Point, Adobe and Outlook, and QA applications;
  • Strong communication and presentation skills, verbal and written;
  • Diverse knowledge of inspection and control methods, techniques and documentation;
  • Strong problem solving and time management skills;
  • Experience in Aviation Environment and working with SMS systems is an asset;
  • Management of Emergency Response Plan;
  • Experience with SMS systems, reporting, training and monitoring;
  • Experience with developing Safety Goals and metrics from the stated Safety objectives;
  • Establishing and maintaining a reporting system to collect safety-related data;
  • Conducting hazard identification and risk management analyses;
  • Ability to be flexible and be a team player with a focus on continuous improvement process and development;
  • Broad operational knowledge and experience in the functions of the organization (e.g. training management, aircraft operations, air traffic management, dispatch operations, and maintenance organization management);
  • Ability to relate to all levels, both inside and outside the organization; and
  • Leadership skills and an authoritative approach.
