Many exciting, antique airplanes have conventional landing gear...tailwheels. Start your tailwheel adventures in a Piper J-5A Cub Cruiser, a classic tailwheel trainer.

Most tailwheel endorsement take between 5 and 10 hours of instruction with an emphasis on three point and wheel landings.

GreyCat Aviation tailwheel training is flown in a 1941 Piper J-5A Cub Cruiser based at the Hampton Roads Executive Airport (KPVG) using the many uncontrolled fields in the local area.

The Piper J-5 ´Cub Cruiser´ (Army L-4F) is a larger, more powerful version of the Piper J-3 Cub. It was designed just two years after the J-3 Cub and differed by having a wider fuselage with the pilot sitting in the front seat and two passengers sitting in the rear seat. Originally equipped with a 75-hp Continental engine, the plane´s cruising speed was 75 mph. Though officially a three-seater, it would be more accurately described as a "two-and-a-half-seater", as two adults would find themselves quite cramped in the wider rear seat.

Last week 3/9/18 through 3/11/18, I received tail wheel training from Graycat Aviation. I needed 10 hours in my (new) 1946 Piper Pa12 for insurance purposes. Graycat got the job done in just 3 days. The patient instructor taught me a tremendous amount about the intricacies of tail wheel flying. I highly recommend Graycat Aviation to anyone who is interested in transitioning to this rather challenging type of flying. Satisfied customer, John Morton John Morton
